Faith Lutheran School acknowledges that God has given all students special talents. Some students have an outstanding demonstrated ability or potential in one or more of these areas:
logical - mathematical
linguistic
creative thinking - visual and performing arts
psychomotor
interpersonal and intrapersonal (1)
Students need educational challenges to match their abilities. While gifted students have often been seen to be capable of high achievement without assistance, gifted students are at risk of not fulfilling their potential if their abilities are not identified and nurtured (2). Emerging trends across Australia indicate that the greatest underachievers are often gifted students. Appropriate support from the family and school can help a student to reach their full potential.
Our Approach
The Gifted Education Program aims to:
identify gifted students as early as possible by collecting and analyzing IQ results, standardized comprehension and maths scores, staff input, interviews and performance observations, for each new group of year 8 students.
provide extension opportunities for gifted students by supporting and leading Cosmic Cluster (3) Workshops, the annual Cosmic Cluster Camp, and Year 8 and 9 Withdrawal programs.
help students develop confidence in using their God given gifts by helping students better understand their gifts, how to deal with the issues associated with being gifted and fostering friendships between gifted students.
develop a differentiated curriculum by encouraging gifted students to negotiate with staff their own extension program within subjects.
provide acceleration possibilities by facilitating subject acceleration for year 10 and 11 students.
